You can use Answer Set Piping to create a ranking or rating scale type question.

Example:

Background:

To create a rating scale type question where you ask a respondent to rank answer options; Answer Set Piping is the easiest way to do so. Use Answer Set Piping  to insert either the selected or unselected answers from a prior question into a followup question. You can choose to insert either “Answers not selected” or “Answers that were selected”. In either case, if the answer set that is to be inserted consists of only one option, the question will not be displayed since the answer is apparent without the need to ask the question. To create a ranking scale you will use the “Answers not selected” type recursively until you have collected all of the ranking positions you desire. As an example you can ask for first, second, and third choice from a list of twenty options, or rank all of the options. For each subsequent step the answers that have already been selected will disappear from the list.

Example:

Pinnion-Questions-tab

    • On the “Questions” screen create  the initial rating scale including all of the answer options to be rated, and instructions. (Include instructions for selecting or rating the “FIRST” item)

Pinnion-Ranking-Q1

    • Next create a new question with instructions for selecting or ranking an item as “SECOND”

  • Once you have created the question click on the GEAR icon at the top of the center pane.

  • Select “answer piping” as shown below.

Pinnion-Advanced-Settings-PIPED_ANSWERS

    • You will now see the  “Pipe Answers” controls in the right pane next to your question as shown below.

Pinnion-Ranking-Q2

    • By selecting “Answers not selected” in the “Pipe selection” drop-down shown above (GREEN) you will present the respondent with an answer list from which their prior selection has been removed.

  • Now set the source question for the answer list to be your initial rating question using the “Pipe answers from” drop-down shown above (BLUE).

To create THIRD, FOURTH, and further rating options:

    • Simply duplicate the second choice question by using the duplicate function when hovering over the question in the left hand pane.

  • Select the duplicated question

  • Change the question text by removing the “(Duplicate)” text added by the duplication process, and altering the instructions to reflect the next selection to be made such as “Choose your THIRD choice”

  • Expand the  “Pipe answers from” drop-down shown above (BLUE) and change the source to the ranking question that precedes the step you are currently authoring. (in this example we are creating the THIRD choice input, so the source should be changed to the SECOND choice question)

  • You can repeat these last steps to collect rankings for as many options as you desire.

Additional options:

You may wish to eliminate the need for a respondent to select an item and then click on the next button to make their next choice. This can be done using the “Confirmation Options” settings in the bottom of the center pane on the “Questions” screen (shown below)

Pinnion_Confirmation-Options-Advance-on-select

    • Advance on select — takes the respondent to the next question immediately after selecting an answer to the current question.
        • The question must be a “single select” question where only one answer is permitted

    • The question must be a button or radio/check box interface (sliders and pickers do not support this feature)
    • If a respondent wishes to change their choice they can use the back navigation (top left of the frame) to go back and change their selection so long as the “Disable back button” option is not selected (shown above)
    • The “Next” button is not displayed

  • Tap to confirm — replaces the text on the selected option with “Confirm choice?”, a second tap advances to the next question.
